Discount Calculator
Enter the original price and the discount — as a percentage or a fixed amount — to get the sale price and how much the customer saves.
How to calculate a discount
Percentage discount amount = original price × discount ÷ 100. Sale price = original price − discount amount. A fixed discount is simply subtracted from the price.
How to use the discount calculator (formula)
What each field means
- Original price — The regular price before the discount.
- Discount type — Percentage off or a fixed amount off.
- Discount — The size of the discount.
Worked example
Using these numbers: original price $80.00, discount type percentage, discount 25.
The sale price is $60.00.
- Discount amount: $20.00
- Customer saves: 25.0%
How big should a discount be?
Discounts of 10–20% usually move buyers without destroying margin. Before running a sale, check your new margin with the profit calculator — a 20% discount can remove most of the profit on a 30% margin product.
Tips to improve your result
- Check profit after the discount, not just the sale price.
- Fixed-amount discounts feel bigger on low-priced items; percentages on high-priced ones.
- Time-limited discounts convert better than permanent ones.
- Use bundles instead of deep discounts to protect margin.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate 20% off?
Multiply the price by 0.20 to get the discount, then subtract it. 20% off 80 = 16 off, so the sale price is 64.
Is a percentage or fixed discount better?
Percentage works better on higher prices; a fixed amount often feels larger on low-priced products.
How do discounts affect profit margin?
The discount comes straight out of profit, so a 20% discount on a 30% margin product leaves only about 12.5% margin.
How do I calculate the discount percentage from two prices?
Discount % = (original price − sale price) ÷ original price × 100.
